Burleigh castle dates from the sixteenth-century and was constructed by Sir John Balfour of Balgarvie. The walls of the rectangular main tower are five feet thick and rise up four storeys to the parapet level. The attic storey and roof are gone.

The small tower is curiously built. Circular at the base it is corbelled at the top to allow a square watchroom. The spiral staircase servicing this tower is in odd bulge almost like it was an afterthought.
