The land was owned by the Ross family, however, they supported the losing side in the war against Robert the Bruce. He removed the property from them and created the Barony of Arnele for Sir Robert Boyd of Kilmarnock. All our information says the keep was probably built as a stopping place for Robert the Bruce when he was travelling.

The keep was built in the 15th century and an addition was made a little bit later. The addition is four stories while the original is three. In the 1600's, the building was used by fishermen until the roof was torn off in a storm. It is mostly blocked up and no access to the interior was available.
