When we visited Tomnaverie Circle in 1997, it had not been restored or excavated. The circle has since been excavated by Reading University Archaeology Dept. The work ended in April of 2000. Several of the stones have been re-erected, so the photo above is no longer accurate.
Tomnaverie was probably built between 1800 and 1600 BC, making this circle about 4000 years old. The circle was built on top of a hill. The side of the hill was being quarried for stone (along the fence line) and the circle was almost lost. It is now in the care of Historic Scotland and the quarry is inactive.
